US President Donald Trump said that Syria has become “very stable,” considering that his decision to lift sanctions on it was a “great decision,” and announcing that the United States will move to remove Syria from the list of states sponsoring terrorism.
Trump added that Syria could help the United States in the Hezbollah and Lebanon issue, considering that the new phase in Damascus opens the door to a different role for Syria in the region.
For his part, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa said that the Syrian people are grateful to the American president, referring to the decision to lift sanctions and the shift in American policy towards Damascus.
Regarding the Lebanese file, Trump expressed his belief that Israel will withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon, adding that “Israel and Lebanon have done a wonderful job,” and continued: “Israel will leave Lebanon.”
Trump’s statements come in light of the continued work on the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel under American sponsorship, which aims to stabilize the truce and redeploy the Lebanese army in the south in conjunction with the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
Trump also renewed his criticism of Iran, considering that it is “behaving badly,” at a time when the region is witnessing escalating tension between Washington and Tehran, especially in the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon.
In another context, Trump criticized the European Union, saying that it had treated the United States “badly for years.” He also reiterated that its policies were decisive in protecting Israel, adding: “If I had not been president, Israel would not exist now.”
