The Uruguayan Football Federation revealed the nature of the injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte during his country’s match against Spain, within the 2026 World Cup.
Ugarte left the match after suffering a severe injury that prevented him from completing the match, which ended with Spain defeating Uruguay 1-0, leaving it at the top of Group H and qualifying for the round of 32.
The Uruguay national team explained, in an official statement, that tests confirmed that Ugarte suffered a rupture in the cruciate ligament of the knee, after a medical evaluation conducted in cooperation with Manchester United.
It is expected that the 25-year-old player will be absent from the field for a period of no less than eight months.
With this loss, Uruguay’s balance froze at two points in third place, bidding farewell to the World Cup, after tying in the first round with Saudi Arabia by a goal for the same, then tying with Cape Verde with two goals for the same.
As for Spain, it raised its score to 7 points at the top, after drawing in the opening match with Cape Verde with a goal to match, and beating Saudi Arabia 4-0, before deciding the confrontation with Uruguay.
