Apple revealed a wide range of improvements to the “Photos” application within the new operating system iOS 27, with the aim of developing the experience of editing, organizing and sharing photos based on the new artificial intelligence capabilities provided by the company this year.

Although the update does not include radical changes in the design of the application, it brings a number of features that are among the major additions that the Photos application has witnessed in recent years.

iOS 27 relies on Apple’s artificial intelligence platform known as “Apple Intelligence” to provide three advanced photo editing tools, including a greatly improved version of the Clean Up tool.

The “Extend” tool allows users to automatically expand the image frame and add new content that matches the original scene, which helps in adjusting the aspect ratio or correcting the skewed horizon without losing any important elements.

As for the “Reframe” tool, it uses advanced spatial models inspired by the technology of the “Apple Vision Pro” glasses, so the user can re-adjust the angle of the scene within the image after taking it, while previewing the changes instantly, as if the camera was repositioned during the shooting.

Big updates to shared albums via iCloud

Apple made the first substantive updates in years to the shared albums feature via iCloud with the iOS 27 update, adding a set of new features that make it easier to share content between users.

The improvements include support for sharing photos and video clips in full resolution, the ability to share albums with users of Windows and Android systems, in addition to interacting using any emoji, facilitating saving photos, setting the expiration date of shared albums, and granting additional permissions to participants.

Smarter organizing and categorization tools

Apple has added two new groups within the Utilities section of the application, the first of which is called “I took myself,” and displays only photos taken by the user personally, excluding screenshots and photos saved from other sources.

The second group is called “Identity Documents,” and it relies on analyzing the image library to automatically find important documents, such as passports and driver’s licenses, and display them in one easy-to-access place.

Smarter organizing and categorization tools

Users can now add keywords to photos to facilitate searching and organizing in the future, in addition to the general improvements the company has made to album management.

Improvements to slide shows

The Slideshows feature has new customization options that allow users to change the transition effects between images, and specify the duration of the entire show or the duration of each image separately.

It is also now possible to save any slideshow directly as a video file with one click, making it easy to share it across various applications or keep it as a digital memory.

Apple has not made any major modifications to the general interface of the Photos application, as the new update focuses on enhancing practical functions and adding smart tools that give users greater flexibility in editing, organizing, and sharing, which makes iOS 27 one of the most important updates that the Photos application has received in years.
