During a meeting held at Baabda Palace before noon today, President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam discussed recent local and regional developments, especially the repercussions of the announcement of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, and its potential repercussions on Lebanon and the region.
The meeting discussed international and regional reactions to the agreement, in addition to the communications that Lebanon received in the past hours related to this file.
The discussion also touched on the ongoing preparations for the next round of Lebanese-American-Israeli negotiations scheduled to be held in Washington next week, in anticipation of the stage that will follow the American-Iranian understanding.
According to the information, Presidents Aoun and Salam considered that the understanding between Washington and Tehran constitutes a positive factor that would contribute to reducing regional tension, pushing towards political solutions, and ending wars and conflicts in the region.
The two sides affirmed the stability of the Lebanese position in the upcoming negotiations, in terms of demanding a final ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Lebanese territories they still occupy, and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the international border.
They also stressed the need to return the Lebanese prisoners and launch the reconstruction process in the affected areas, as they are essential elements in any settlement or future understanding.
These positions come at a time when attention is turning to Washington and Geneva as a new phase of the US-Iranian negotiations approaches, amid bets on its repercussions on the Lebanese arena and the outstanding border and security issues.
According to “Lebanon Debate” information, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam left Baabda Palace without making any statement after the end of the meeting.
