On Tuesday morning, Israeli media reported monitoring the launching of a missile salvo from southern Lebanon towards the Upper Galilee region in northern Israel, coinciding with the activation of Israeli air defense systems and the interception of a number of targets in the air.
Israeli Channel 12 reported that air interceptions were monitored in the vicinity of the Metulla settlement, while explosions sounded in the area’s airspace resulting from air defense activity.
According to Hebrew reports, Israeli forces in the northern sector were on alert after spotting the missiles, amid field follow-up to determine the nature of the targets and their path.
This development comes hours after Hezbollah announced that it had confronted an Israeli force that attempted to advance towards the Kafr Tibnit crossing in southern Lebanon.
The party said in a statement that Israeli forces re-mobilized their vehicles around the area by bringing in an armored force consisting of Merkava tanks and military vehicles, noting that they were targeted with missile launchers and artillery shells and forced to retreat.
For its part, the National News Agency reported that the region witnessed clashes between the two sides, coinciding with a limited field escalation along some border axes.
This development comes at a time when the region is witnessing a delicate phase following the announcement of the American-Iranian understanding, which included talk about stopping military operations on various fronts, including the Lebanese arena.
These events also coincide with continued tension on the southern border, where the past months have witnessed repeated confrontations, raids and mutual military operations, amid regional and international diplomatic efforts to prevent the expansion of the confrontation and contain the escalation.
The Lebanese front remains one of the most sensitive arenas in the region, due to the interplay of military, political and regional factors, which makes any development on the ground subject to careful follow-up by the various parties concerned.
