Today, the Israeli army issued an urgent warning to the residents of southern Lebanon, calling on everyone south of the Zahrani River to evacuate their homes immediately and move north of the river, in a development that raises the level of concern about the expansion of Israeli operations in the south.
The Israeli army said, in a warning statement directed to the residents of southern Lebanon, that “in light of Hezbollah violating the ceasefire agreement and targeting the Israeli home front,” according to its account, it intends to act against it “forcefully” in southern areas, stressing that it does not intend to harm the civilian population.
The Israeli army called on all residents south of the Zahrani River, according to the map it attached to the warning, to evacuate their homes immediately, warning that being near Hezbollah members, facilities, or combat means could endanger life.
He added that any building used by Hezbollah for military purposes may become vulnerable to targeting, calling on residents of the south to move immediately north of the Zahrani River, and warning that any movement south may put their lives in danger.
This warning comes at a very sensitive field moment, with the escalation of Israeli operations in southern Lebanon, especially in the vicinity of Shaqif and Wadi Saluki, where Israeli media are reporting attempts to tighten control over sensitive sites after clashes and intense fire cover from land and air.
The warning also coincides with the expansion of Israeli raids and warnings in a number of southern towns, while Hezbollah continues to announce operations targeting Israeli forces and their field movements, including the use of drones, explosive devices, and ambushes in confrontation areas.
The call to evacuate south of the Zahrani River carries a dangerous field significance, as expanding the warnings to this geographical scope suggests that Israel is threatening to expand the scope of its operations to deeper areas inside the south, beyond the scope of traditional clashes near the border.
The Zahrani River is considered one of the sensitive geographical points in southern Lebanon, as it separates vast southern regions from axes extending towards Nabatieh, Sidon, and the coast. Therefore, transforming it into an Israeli warning line reflects a clear shift in the level of military and psychological pressure on the southern population and environment.
These warnings bring to the forefront the scene of displacement and civil pressure in the south, where residents face repeated waves of warnings and raids, amid fears of the expansion of operations and the transformation of additional areas into direct targeting areas.
In the political and military background, the Israeli warning comes in light of continued talk about a fragile ceasefire agreement, which Israel and Hezbollah are exchanging accusations of violating, while Israel is trying to impose new field realities through raids, incursions, and warnings, while Hezbollah seeks to prevent the consolidation of any Israeli progress through counter field operations.
Between the warning to evacuate southern Zahrani, and the continuation of clashes in several areas, the south appears to be facing a more dangerous stage, as Israeli messages are no longer limited to military sites, but rather include wide residential and geographical areas, increasing the possibilities of displacement and open escalation.
