The United States announced the extension of the “temporary protected status” classification for the Lebanese until November 27, 2026, in a move that allows those included in the program to remain within American territory and obtain work permits, while protecting them from deportation throughout the period of the decision’s validity.

According to a notice published on Wednesday in the US Federal Register, the extension of the program for Lebanon comes in light of the continuing economic, political and security crises that the country has witnessed in recent years.

The Temporary Protected Program (TPS) is a legal status granted by the United States to citizens of countries experiencing wars, disasters, or exceptional circumstances that prevent safe return to them.

The American decision comes at a time when Lebanon is witnessing a widespread security escalation, with the continuation of Israeli raids and warnings affecting several areas in the south and the Bekaa, in addition to the deterioration of economic and living conditions.
