May deceives with a cold depression. Prepare for rain and snow!!

Weather conditions in Lebanon and the region for Thursday and Friday, April 30 and May 1, 2026

A report by Father Eli Khneisser, a specialist in meteorology and climatology in Boston

While the Lebanese are waiting for the warm spring and summer to arrive at the beginning of the month of May, what will come in its first week may be shocking to some and enjoyable to those who love the winter season, which has not yet closed its pages. Rather, it will surprise everyone by spreading cold canon leaves as summer approaches, so what is the news?

Currently, moderate spring weather dominates the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea until next Saturday evening, while air depressions are heading toward southeastern Europe and Turkey, accompanied by a cold polar depression that will hit Greece, the Black Sea basin, and Turkey on Friday, to continue until Monday evening.

It is expected that this cold depression and heavy rain will affect the Syrian coast and Lebanon, with temperatures dropping sharply and quickly at a rate of 13 degrees in the Bekaa and mountains and 8 degrees on the coast on Sunday night and Monday dawn. The first Sunday of May is called in Lebanese popular beliefs “Aboud Sunday.” It is the Sunday in which the pages of winter turn and hot masses begin to expand from the Arabian Peninsula with the position of the seasonal Indian depression in mid-May.

It is known that a shepherd named Abboud, according to popular accounts, took his sheep on the afternoon of the first Saturday of May and went with his flock to a pasture in a mountainous area. Some friends warned him of the heavy rain that was about to hit the area, but Abboud’s stubbornness and failure to listen to the warnings made him pay the heavy price, as torrential rains fell on Sunday morning, the rivers flowed, and the waters washed away Abboud, and he perished along with them. His flock, and that was on the first Sunday of May, so this day was called “Aboud Sunday.”
So, what awaits Lebanon is winter weather par excellence, moderate to heavy rain with hailstones, scattered thunderstorms, and snowfall of about 1,900-2,000 metres, and if the northern winds intensify on Monday, it may fall in the north below 1,800 metres, which we will talk about in detail in the next bulletin.

The weather on Wednesday and Thursday will be sunny and warm, and temperatures will gradually rise until Saturday evening, reaching 26 degrees on the coast and 24 degrees in some areas. Then, the temperatures will drop sharply on Sunday.
