The American artificial intelligence company Anthropic achieved a legal victory, as the court ruled to halt the ban imposed by the administration of former President Donald Trump on the use of its technologies. The company had expressed concerns that this ban could lead to huge financial losses estimated at billions of dollars.
District Court Judge Rita Lin issued a preliminary ruling halting the government’s plans to sever ties with Anthropic. The judge justified her decision by saying that the ban imposed on the “Cloud” application does not appear to be related to national security interests.
The judge explained in her reasons for her ruling that the government’s actions appeared more akin to punishing the company, rather than addressing any real operational safety concerns. The government has been given a period of seven days to file an appeal against this ruling.
It is noteworthy that “Anthropic” has filed a lawsuit to cancel the Ministry of Defense’s classification of it as a threat to supply chains. This comes in light of an ongoing dispute over the controls governing the army’s use of artificial intelligence. The company is seeking guarantees that its applications will not be used for mass surveillance or to develop autonomous weapons.
