Sources reported to Al-Hadath TV that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri was under pressure from the Iranian side against the backdrop of the Lebanese government’s decision to expel Tehran’s ambassador from Beirut, which reflects the intensification of political tension due to the recent diplomatic crisis.
According to the information received, Berri faced direct pressure from Iran to launch a campaign against the Lebanese state because of the decision to expel the ambassador, but he chose not to participate in any action that might lead to the collapse of the government, and he preferred to use political pressure and boycott rather than escalation that might lead to the fall of the executive authority.
The sources explained that Iran and Hezbollah would have preferred to take a more severe stance, up to the point of working to overthrow the Lebanese government, but Berri insisted on managing the dispute politically, while keeping the channels of communication open.
She also indicated that efforts to pressure the Lebanese government to retract its decision regarding the Iranian ambassador did not succeed, in light of the official insistence on the position taken, which kept the crisis within its political framework without turning into a comprehensive constitutional confrontation.
This comes at a time when Lebanon is witnessing increasing disagreements over the decision, amid internal and external anticipation of the development of the relationship between Beirut and Tehran, and the effects of the crisis on the political balances in Lebanon.
