Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called for an extraordinary meeting at the Republican Palace, which was scheduled to be held at exactly eight in the morning. The goal of this meeting is to discuss the emergency developments that began at midnight, in addition to their implications, and work to take the necessary decisions and actions.
This summoning to the emergency session comes in the wake of a noticeable military escalation witnessed on Lebanese territory in recent hours. This escalation includes an exchange of missile shelling and air strikes, due to Hezbollah’s intervention in the regional conflict.
It is noteworthy that the southern suburb of Beirut, and areas in the south and the Bekaa, were subjected to several violent Israeli raids. This came after an announcement of the launching of missiles from southern Lebanon towards northern Israel. The Israeli army also stated that it targeted important Hezbollah leadership figures in Beirut and the south, as part of a broader military operation.
This rapid deterioration of the situation puts the country in a very sensitive security situation, amid fears of an expansion of the scope of the confrontation. This necessitated immediate government action to study ways to control the situation and take the necessary measures at the security and political levels.
