Representative Paula Yacoubian explained through a tweet on her account on the “X” platform that she is still waiting for the government’s answer regarding the question she raised about the appointment of Gracia Al-Qazzi to the position of Director General of Customs. She stressed that Lebanese citizens have the right to know the foundations and criteria on which this appointment was based, given the importance of this site and its direct role in preserving public funds.
Yacoubian pointed out that in light of the continuing repercussions of the August 4 disaster and the judicial investigations not being completed, any appointment to an important and sensitive position is considered a real test of the state’s credibility. She stressed that transparency is not just a secondary administrative procedure, but rather a basic necessity to ensure justice and restore people’s trust.
It is worth noting that the appointment of Gracia Al-Qazi to the position of Director General of Customs has sparked widespread controversy in political and media circles since its announcement, given the importance of this position, which is closely linked to the files of public revenues, combating smuggling, and monitoring border crossings. This debate coincided with continuing demands for the necessity of subjecting administrative appointments to clear and transparent standards, especially in important financial positions.
Discussion about this appointment was also renewed in conjunction with the continuing investigations into the Beirut Port explosion case, and the accompanying calls to hold officials accountable and enhance transparency in the management of public institutions. Every appointment to positions directly related to ports and customs is considered a test of the state’s seriousness in achieving reform and restoring citizens’ confidence.
