The drug crisis amid rumors of price increases: the reality of the interruption and official anticipation

Beirut – “Lebanon Debate”

The past few days have witnessed widespread rumors circulating about the possibility of an increase in drug prices, coinciding with information provided by some pharmacies to their customers advising them to purchase stored quantities in order to avoid an expected increase in prices. Citizens also reported news that several types of medicines had been removed from the shelves, amid growing fears that some parties would resort to monopoly in preparation for raising prices and making illegal profits.

In a related context, union sources denied to the “Lebanon Debate” website the validity of the reports that talk about approving increases in drug prices early next week, stressing that the Ministry of Public Health did not issue any circular or notification in this regard. The sources stressed that this news is “fabricated and aims to exaggerate,” stressing that there is no intention to raise prices at the current stage, taking into account the critical economic living conditions that the Lebanese citizen suffers from.

Regarding the reasons for the scarcity and disappearance of some pharmaceutical items, the sources attributed this interruption to purely external considerations, represented by the decline in the priority of the Lebanese market among international producing companies, which causes a delay in securing orders and shipping them to Lebanon. Thus, the sources denied suspicions about the existence of local monopoly operations behind the loss crisis, contrary to what was recorded in previous similar crises.
