The White House announced today, Friday, that US First Lady Melania Trump had succeeded in reaching an agreement stipulating a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshki, located in southern Ukraine, as of October 29.
The White House explained that the Russian and Ukrainian sides agreed to temporarily suspend all military operations in the city, in order to allow the entry of humanitarian aid and pave the way for the evacuation of civilians through a safe corridor created specifically for this purpose. The statement indicated that Melania Trump and her representative led direct efforts with the leaderships in Moscow and Kiev to conclude this agreement.
This comes in light of the worsening humanitarian crises that the city has witnessed. Last September, the Kremlin acknowledged the existence of very difficult problems facing Oleshki in terms of food and medical supplies, stressing at the time that Russian forces were making efforts to address them, at a time when the Ukrainian army twice resorted to using drones to deliver food and medicine to the town.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the humanitarian conditions in Oleshki as “genocide.” In the same context, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Danielle Bell, reported that the city’s population was about 24,000 people before the outbreak of the conflict, while the number has now declined to only about 1,700 people, including 47 children.
