Ambush and assassination: A bloody escalation strikes southeastern Iran

Two security personnel, one of whom was a Basij official, were killed, and three others were injured in two separate armed attacks a month in the city of Mehristan, located in the Sistan and Baluchestan province, southeastern Iran.

In detail, Mehr News Agency reported that Afsana Aqeela, who served as the leader of the Basij women’s unit in the city, was killed after being exposed to direct fire by unknown gunmen in front of her house.

In a separate incident, gunmen targeted a vehicle carrying members of the law enforcement forces in the city, which led to the killing of a first lieutenant named Muhammad Ali Shahriari, and the wounding of three other members, according to what was reported by the “Noor News” agency, which indicated that the attackers fled after an armed clash with the security forces.

Following the two attacks, Iranian media accused armed groups it described as linked to the United States and Israel of being behind the two operations, without providing independent evidence to support these allegations.

These two incidents come against the backdrop of a noticeable escalation in security tension and armed confrontations taking place in Sistan and Baluchestan Province recently, which resulted in deaths and injuries among the military and security forces through a series of separate attacks.
