French President Emmanuel Macron discussed with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa the prospects for rebuilding Syria and developing its infrastructure, amid efforts to strengthen Damascus’ role in energy supply routes to Europe, thus contributing to reducing dependence on the Strait of Hormuz.
During the discussions, the French President expressed his country’s full support for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity, with the need to respect all its components, stressing Paris’s readiness to contribute effectively to the reconstruction efforts.
The two sides reviewed the process of normalizing bilateral relations and resuming joint cooperation, which was launched following Macron’s visit to the Syrian capital, Damascus, last July and the practical steps that followed.
The discussion focused extensively on the energy and infrastructure sectors, where ways were discussed to establish modern interconnection networks within Syrian territory that would qualify it as a vital corridor for energy supplies from the Middle East to the European continent, an approach to which Paris and the capitals of the continent paid great attention to diversifying energy sources and avoiding the risks surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
On the security issue, the two sides stressed the commitment of the two countries, in cooperation with regional partners, to continue joint efforts to confront armed groups and consolidate the foundations of security and stability in the region.
