Detention of American citizens in the Kingdom on the grounds of their documentation of current events

The US Embassy in Riyadh announced today, Monday, the detention of American citizens in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in connection with filming recent events, renewing its warning to its citizens against filming or publishing information related to air defense systems and drones, in light of the joint security measures that followed the recent attacks that targeted King Khalid International Airport.

The embassy explained in an official statement that the Saudi Ministry of Interior had previously warned that photographing, publishing, or sharing any information related to air defense missiles and drones would expose its perpetrators to strict legal accountability. In this context, the embassy declined to disclose the exact number of American detainees, nor did it clarify whether they had been released yet.

For their part, foreign residents in the capital, Riyadh, reported to Agence France-Presse that people they knew were detained after they filmed recent events and published video clips on social media platforms.

In its security alert, the embassy stressed that American visitors and residents are fully subject to local laws throughout their stay in the Kingdom’s territory, calling on them to exercise the utmost caution when using Saudi airports, given the possibility of flight cancellations and airspace closures.

These developments come in the wake of a series of attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and claimed by the Houthis, the bloodiest of which last Saturday resulted in the killing of 13 people, including an American citizen.

In a related context, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation announced today, Monday, the extension of the suspension of operational operations at King Khalid International Airport until further notice.
