Billionaire Elon Musk has pumped hundreds of millions of dollars to support the Republican Party in the 2026 US midterm elections, in light of the intense competition for control of the two chambers of Congress (the House of Representatives and the Senate).
Election campaign finance records, based on a New York Times report, revealed that Musk has so far spent about $366 million during the current election cycle, which began on January 1, 2025. Of this, at least $276 million has been spent since last July, making him likely to be the largest single political donor in this year’s election.
A spokesman for Musk’s political action committee, known as America PAC, confirmed the details of these numbers, explaining that $158 million in recent donations were directed to the Senate Leadership Fund, which supports Republican candidates for the Senate and is allied with Republican Majority Leader John Thune.
The donations also included the allocation of $20 million to the “Congressional Leadership Fund” that supports Republicans in the House of Representatives, and $76 million to the “America PAC” committee itself, in addition to providing additional funds through groups that do not disclose the identity of their donors, according to what the committee’s spokesman confirmed.
In the context of support directed to specific election races, Musk donated $10 million to the “Lone Star Liberty” committee supporting the candidacy of the Republican Attorney General of Texas, Ken Paxton, for Senate in a race in which opinion polls indicate a close closeness with his Democratic competitor, James Tallarico. Donations also included $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
The “America PAC” committee focuses its efforts on supporting Republican candidates in seven states witnessing intense competition between the two parties, in addition to about 36 electoral races for seats in the House of Representatives. These new donations are scheduled to be officially revealed on Thursday, coinciding with a number of super PACs announcing their expenditure reports for the third quarter.
These developments and huge spending, which comes after Musk spent nearly $290 million during the last election cycle, come at a time when the billionaire faces the possibility of being subjected to expanded investigations if the Democrats succeed in regaining control of the House of Representatives. Democratic representatives are demanding that government contracts for the SpaceX company he runs be subject to scrutiny, in addition to a review of his work within the Ministry of Government Efficiency during the era of President Donald Trump.
