Why does Google Maps sometimes prefer longer routes?

Google Maps users may sometimes notice that they are being directed along longer roads or side streets instead of the usual route, which is not a routing error, but rather may be related to a strategy aimed at distributing traffic and reducing congestion on major roads.

In this context, a report published by the technical website “BGR” was based on a study conducted by researchers at Google, which confirmed that directing some drivers to alternative paths contributes to improving the flow of traffic, even if those paths are not the shortest in terms of distance.

The results of the study, which was conducted over a period of six months in ten American cities and included about 100 crowded traffic sections, showed that redirecting part of the vehicle traffic away from crowded highways led to an increase in traffic speed by 2%, and a reduction in the duration of trips by 0.7%. The researchers also estimated the possibility of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about a thousand tons in each city.

Besides traffic management, there are other reasons related to application settings that may affect route selection; The most prominent of which is the fuel saving option that prefers the most energy efficient routes, in addition to activating the options to avoid highways, tolls or ferries, as well as instant traffic updates such as accidents and maintenance works that lead to updating routes during the trip.

In conclusion, these results do not mean that every longer route suggested by the application is always the best option, so it is recommended to compare alternative options and review the expected time of arrival and trip settings to ensure that they suit the driver’s needs and road conditions.
