The Palestinian leadership’s decision to postpone the presidential and legislative elections until September 11, 2027 sparked an intense political debate with Israel, after the Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, disavowed his country’s responsibility for disrupting the electoral process, and accused the Palestinian leadership of employing Israeli pretexts for the purpose of “deceiving the international community.”
Saar had expressed his categorical refusal to hold Israel responsible for postponing the elections on their original date, criticizing in a post on the “X” platform the justifications given by the Palestinian side and describing them as an attempt to mislead international parties.
On the other hand, the Palestinian presidential decree based its justification for the postponement decision on the obstacles resulting from Israeli practices, as well as the complexities of the security, political, and field conditions in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, stressing that these facts prevent securing the necessary conditions for organizing a free, fair, and comprehensive vote.
The decree explained that among the most prominent obstacles are the restrictions imposed on freedom of movement in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, in addition to the growing settlement expansion and escalation of settler attacks, in addition to Israel’s continued withholding of Palestinian tax revenues.
At the field level in the Gaza Strip, the decision attributed the postponement of the entitlement to the exceptional security and humanitarian conditions, the absence of a complete Israeli withdrawal, and the faltering efforts of the reconstruction process.
It is noteworthy that the new amendment canceled the previous date that was scheduled for the legislative elections on the twenty-eighth of November 2026, setting the eleventh of September 2027 as a simultaneous date for holding the presidential and legislative elections, with an invitation extended to all Palestinian citizens in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip to participate in the electoral process.
