Trump avoids talking about the two-state solution, focusing on the reconstruction of Gaza

Hours after the signing of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas during the Sharm El-Sheikh summit, US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, refused to delve into the issue of the “two-state solution,” stressing that the priority now is the reconstruction of Gaza.

“I’m not talking about one or two countries, we’re talking about the reconstruction of Gaza,” Trump told reporters aboard his presidential plane on his way back from the Middle East. He added: “Many support the one-state solution, while others support the two-state solution. We will see… I have not commented on that yet.”

The US President indicated that he coordinated in advance with a number of countries to discuss the future of governance in the Strip, pointing out that “the Gaza agreement came at the ideal time to end the war and begin the construction phase.”

For his part, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stressed during the summit the importance of the agreement, describing it as “a historic opportunity that may be the last to achieve a stable and conflict-free Middle East.”

Al-Sisi reiterated that the two-state solution must be achieved in a way that guarantees cooperation and peace among the peoples of the region, while Trump seemed more cautious in commenting on the idea, especially after he described in his recent speech before the United Nations General Assembly the broad world support for the Palestinian state as a “reward for the Hamas movement.”

It is expected that the next stage will open the door to new negotiations about the future of Gaza after the war, amid questions about the form of the next civil administration for the Strip and the American role in reconstruction.
