A horrific train accident in Slovakia
Between 60 and 80 passengers were injured on Monday morning when a passenger train heading from Košice to Bratislava collided with a stopped freight train, during rush hour on one of Slovakia’s main transport corridors. The incident occurred around eight in the morning local time outside the capital, Ljubljana.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that a comprehensive investigation must be conducted to clarify the causes of “this tragedy,” calling for a full investigation. The authorities reported that about 10 people were seriously injured, and rescue teams and paramedics arrived at the site within minutes.
Officials reported that most of the injuries were caused by the force of the collision and the subsequent derailment, while others suffered loss of consciousness as a result of the shock. Initial reports indicated that the passenger train, which was traveling at a moderate speed, did not receive a warning signal before the accident. Later, one of the trains was seen hanging over a valley while rescuers worked at the scene.
