The US State Department categorically rejected what was stated in the Reuters report regarding Iran sending money to Hezbollah, considering that talk about the flow of Iranian funds to the party is “incorrect.” Washington confirmed that it will continue to target the party’s funding sources through sanctions and prevent the rebuilding of its capabilities.
Commenting on the report, US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigot said: “Hezbollah has every motive to promote stories like this through anonymous sources. It can claim whatever it wants, but the money does not exist.” He added that the party “received devastating blows and caused the suffering of hundreds of thousands of innocent Lebanese,” accusing it of trying to “save face through false stories about the flow of money from Iran.”
Pigot touched on the economic situation in Tehran, noting that Iran’s oil exports are “under siege,” and that its currency is witnessing an “accelerating collapse.” He stressed that the United States “will continue to strangle Hezbollah’s sources of funding through sanctions,” in parallel with supporting the Lebanese government’s ability to rebuild the south.
Pigot considered that “Hezbollah has brought nothing but misery to Lebanon and the people it claims to represent,” accusing it of igniting a war “on behalf of Tehran” and causing billions of dollars in damage. He added: “Even if this amount of appeasement were real, it would not be enough.”
Pigot concluded his statements with a firm message, stressing that “under President Trump’s administration, Hezbollah will never be able to regain its strength or rebuild its terrorist infrastructure.”
The American position comes in response to a report published by Reuters that Hezbollah received funds from Iran during the recent period, in conjunction with Washington continuing to impose sanctions targeting networks and individuals it accuses of financing the party or facilitating the access of funds to it.
