The US authorities have withdrawn their B-1 strategic bombers from Fairford Air Base in Britain, following unusual security concerns linked to a complex plan in which Iran is suspected of involvement to target the base using drones.
On Tuesday, two American officials confirmed to Reuters the process of withdrawing the aircraft to avoid any possible attack, and they preferred to remain anonymous, while the US Army’s European Command refrained from disclosing intelligence details or commenting on the procedures for protecting the forces.
This action came the day after statements made by US President Donald Trump to reporters at the White House, in which he explained that “threats” necessitated the transfer of the bombers from the base located in southwest England, adding, “Instead of leaving them vulnerable to enemies…we moved them a little, we did not move them far away,” without revealing their new location.
In a related context, the British police announced the arrest of a 22-year-old British man in the capital, London, on suspicion of his involvement in planning an attack related to the ongoing investigations into the “Fairford” base.
For its part, Tehran categorically denied any connection to the alleged plot targeting the base, which is one of the most prominent European facilities to host Washington’s long-range bombers.
In turn, a spokesman for the US Army’s European Command stressed that “it is not appropriate to discuss intelligence issues,” stressing at the same time that American B-1, B-2, and B-52 bombers have the ability to carry out precise strikes from and returning to American territory.
The “Fairford” base is of great strategic importance as a major focal point for American strategic aviation in Europe, which gives the recent threats security dimensions that go beyond the British interior to affect the security of the American military deployment on the entire continent, at a time when the base’s surroundings were subjected to strict security measures against the backdrop of British investigations into suspicious movements.
