A state of shock and anxiety prevailed over the southern town of Azza, following the disappearance of its mayor, Mustafa Jammoul, in mysterious circumstances in the Emirati capital, Dubai, amid conflicting news about his fate and the reasons for his arrest.
In the details of the incident, a source from the Jammoul family explained that he arrived in Dubai last Friday from Guinea on a regular business trip, due to his commercial activity in the maritime transport sector and ships between Guinea, Dubai and Beirut.
The source added that hours after his arrival and stay in a hotel, Jammoul was summoned to the hotel lobby, where security personnel were waiting for him, and he completely lost track of him since then.
Given that Jammoul holds Canadian citizenship, his wife quickly informed the Canadian Consulate in the Emirates, which confirmed to her, upon follow-up, that Jammoul was arrested in connection with a case of a security nature, noting that the consulate is communicating with the official authorities in Dubai to find out the details.
The family’s efforts were not limited to the Canadian side, as it contacted the General Directorate of Lebanese Public Security, which in turn is responsible for following up on the case through the Director General, Major General Hassan Choucair, given that the detainee holds an official position as head of a Lebanese municipality.
In this context, the family received unconfirmed information indicating that the arrest may be linked to a lawsuit related to fraud cases, while the family confirms that it has not yet received any clear official account that accurately defines the charges against him.
The people of the town of Azza described their mayor as “good,” noting that he is a wealthy businessman known for his constant initiatives to meet the needs of the townspeople and help those in need.
In light of the scarcity of official information, the family expressed their fear that the background to the arrest might be related to the pressures facing the “Shiite duo” environment in Lebanon, pointing out the lack of conclusive data to prove this hypothesis.
In conclusion, the family sent an urgent appeal to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the security services in Lebanon to intensify diplomatic and security contacts to clarify the fate of the mayor, and to confirm the conditions of his detention as a Lebanese citizen and mayor, stressing its anticipation of any official and reliable data revealing his whereabouts and the charges against him.
