Is artificial intelligence shaping the future of websites?

Websites face increasing challenges in light of the widespread use of artificial intelligence tools, which now allow users to obtain direct answers, summaries, and comparisons, without the need to visit the platforms that produced the original content.

This digital transformation threatens the economic models of websites that rely primarily on visits and advertisements to generate their revenues. The decline in traffic leads to a decline in page views and advertising revenues, in conjunction with artificial intelligence systems continuing to exploit the content of those sites as the primary source of their information.

In the face of these challenges, digital institutions find themselves forced to search for alternative sources of funding. These include subscription models, paid services, specialized content provision, as well as strategic partnerships with major technology companies.

Despite these transformations, current data confirms that websites will not disappear, given the continuing need for them as original sources and references for full details, breaking news, and various services. However, its functional role is moving towards transforming from a “main destination” that the user goes directly to, to a “back-end source” that artificial intelligence tools rely on to feed their content.
