Escalation near Meretz's visit: Kyiv warns of a plan to empty the capital

An unannounced visit by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, coincided with a massive field escalation, represented by the sound of sirens and the targeting of a bridge in the city with a drone. Mertz was accompanied on his visit by a delegation of executives from German defense companies, in a move aimed at confirming Berlin’s support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in light of the escalation of Russian attacks.

German government officials revealed that Meretz intends to announce a new aid package that includes one billion euros for the military field, and 350 million euros for the rehabilitation of the energy sector, as well as putting the final touches on an agreement for the joint production of drones. Reuters quoted Meretz as saying, “Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks,” warning that the Russian war machine will head toward Europe sooner or later if it is not stopped.

On the other hand, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Moscow will continue to systematically attack targets in Ukraine, considering these strikes a retaliatory response to the recent Ukrainian attacks inside Russian territory, and warned foreign citizens and diplomatic workers against staying in or traveling to Ukraine.

On the intelligence level, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country’s services had obtained documents proving Russian President Vladimir Putin’s approval of a “new doctrine” targeting the civil and logistical infrastructure, transportation networks, and hospitals, with the aim of pushing the residents of Kiev and other cities to flee and undermining the home front as winter approaches. Zelensky added that his country will intensify its attacks on oil refineries inside Russia in response to this escalation.

On the ground, Ukrainian air defense systems are facing increasing pressure as a result of Moscow launching dozens of “Shahed” jet drones daily, forcing Kiev to rely mainly on F-16 and MiG fighters to shoot down about 60% of them amid a decreasing ammunition stock.Zelensky explained that Ukraine is working to develop urgent solutions that include enhancing electronic jamming, developing local interceptor models, and receiving shipments of air defense missiles. Low cost.

In a remarkable military development, Kiev announced this week the first combat use of a locally made ballistic missile, the “FP-7,” with a range of 250 kilometers, amid efforts to develop a longer-range version bearing the name “FP-9.” Zelensky also pointed to securing European funding to cover drone orders until the beginning of 2027, and filling a financial gap worth $27 billion in the Ukrainian defense budget for the current year.
