Franjieh puts the new ministry's formation on the table for open discussion

Today, the subcommittee emanating from the joint parliamentary committees began studying the draft law aimed at establishing a specialized ministry for technology and artificial intelligence in Lebanon, in a step aimed at establishing an independent institutional framework to regulate this vital sector.

The session was held under the chairmanship of MP Tony Franjieh, and in the presence of the Minister of State for Administrative Development Affairs, Fadi Makki, and the Minister of Displaced Persons and Minister of State for Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence, Kamal Shehadeh. Representatives Saeed Al-Asmar, Bilal Al-Hashimi, Yassin Yassin, Alain Aoun, Razi Al-Hajj, Adnan Trabelsi, Ashraf Baydoun, Hassan Ezz El-Din, and Rami Abu Hamdan also participated in the meeting.

The session witnessed the presence of a number of administrative and technical officials, namely: Director General of the Ministry of Displaced Persons, Ahmed Mahmoud, and Charbel Shabir and Nadine Shawi, representatives of the Ministries of Displaced Persons and Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence, in addition to Hala Rasheed and Dimitri Stefano, representatives of the Ministry of Administrative Development.

The discussions were devoted to studying the draft law contained in Decree No. 1286, clause by clause, with the committee continuing to discuss the rest of the articles in subsequent sessions in preparation for concluding its legislative process.

This legislative move is of great importance in light of the rapid expansion of the uses of technology and artificial intelligence in the administration, economics, and services sectors, and the urgent need for an official body to formulate public policies, lead the path of digital transformation, and develop public administration to keep pace with modern technologies.
