The Ronaldo and Jesus crisis is turning into an issue of public opinion in Portugal

The Portuguese government entered the flaming crisis between national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo and coach Jorge Jesus, in an attempt to contain the repercussions of the dispute that resulted in the veteran star leaving the “Buds of Europe” camp.

The roots of the crisis go back to the coach’s decision to keep Ronaldo on the bench throughout the match against Norway in the European Nations League, and the subsequent statements made by Jesus after the match that aroused the player’s dissatisfaction, prompting him to decide to leave the camp early before the upcoming match against Denmark.

The Portuguese newspaper “Observador” revealed that the crisis escalated to take on the character of a “state issue,” following a series of phone calls made by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro with the concerned parties, which included Cristiano Ronaldo, coach Jorge Jesus, and Portuguese Federation President Pedro Proenca.

The newspaper explained that the Prime Minister’s move was motivated by deep concern about the repercussions of this crisis, not only at the level of the national team and the local football federation, but also because of its potential effects on Portugal’s image and reputation on the international scene.

On the political level, former Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa issued a clear call to close ranks and rally around the national team at this stage of the movement. In the same context, the Prime Minister of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, expressed his absolute support for Ronaldo, praising his distinguished career and his great contributions to strengthening the country’s global presence.

In turn, the Minister of Economy, Manuel Castro Almeida, considered that the 41-year-old star is an “important strategic asset for Portugal,” expressing his aspiration that Portuguese football will continue to benefit from the experiences and capabilities of its historic leader.
