In a step aimed at containing the escalating tension, the Portuguese national team coach, Jorge Jesus, expressed his agreement to sit at the dialogue table with the national team captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, with direct mediation from the Portuguese Football Federation, in an attempt to end the dispute that broke out during the current international break.
Press reports stated that the secret contacts led by the Portuguese Federation achieved remarkable progress in bringing the views of the two parties closer together, but reaching a final settlement of the crisis has not been completely resolved yet.
The roots of the crisis go back to the coach’s decision to keep Ronaldo on the bench throughout the match against Norway, and it later worsened against the backdrop of Jesus’ statements in which he stressed that the status of any player does not grant him special treatment, and that technical decisions remain his absolute authority alone. Following this, Ronaldo left the national team camp in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, on his private plane, heading to Madrid.
The Portuguese coach’s move comes at a sensitive time, as Ronaldo’s departure from the camp sparked widespread controversy about his international future, while intense efforts continue by the local federation to contain the crisis and restore stability to the national team.
