Abu Faour warns of the repercussions of the works budget amid increasing parliamentary pressure

Member of the Democratic Gathering, MP Wael Abu Faour, criticized the trend to reduce the budget of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in isolation from other ministries, calling for securing additional revenues by combating tax and customs evasion and collecting dues from violators, instead of making it easy to impose new tax burdens on citizens.

In a statement published by the official account of the Progressive Socialist Party on the “X” platform, Abu Faour explained that “despite our awareness of the difficult financial situation, and far from the partisanship of Minister Fayez Rasamny, it seems very strange that there is a tendency to reduce the budget of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to the exclusion of other ministries, despite the importance of what it does throughout Lebanon and without discrimination.” He asked, “Is it required to punish productive ministries and accomplished ministers?”

Abu Faour stressed the need to create “quality revenues” away from burdening citizens with additional burdens, noting that the sources of these revenues are available, most notably combating tax and customs evasion, and collecting taxes due from violators, in addition to other implementable proposals.

Representative Abu Faour’s position comes to place the financing of public services at the heart of the debate on government spending priorities, as he links his objection to reducing the budget of the Ministry of Works to the importance of the projects it is implementing in various regions, proposing improving the efficiency of collection and prosecuting violations as a practical alternative to the option of increasing taxes.
