A security operation carried out by the Syrian Internal Security Forces in the Yarmouk Basin in the western countryside of Daraa, which resulted in the arrest of a cell of three people, raised concerns about the possibility of launching missiles towards Israel from Syrian territory. These developments come amid Hezbollah’s categorical denial of any connection to the cell or the presence of any security and military activity in Syria.
In detail, a report prepared by journalist Dana Pollack at the Israeli “Alma” Center was based on the announcement by the Syrian Internal Security Forces, on September 29, 2026, of the seizure of the cell that was preparing infrastructure to launch missiles towards Israel, where they published scenes showing 122-meter “Grad” missiles that were seized at the site.
On the other hand, Hezbollah’s media relations issued a statement in which it “categorically denied any relationship or connection between the party and the alleged cell,” stressing that it does not have any security or military presence or activity in Syrian territory, and its constant concern for Syria’s security, stability, and the safety of its people.
The party called on official Syrian authorities to be alert to attempts to use its name with the aim of creating tension and sowing discord between Lebanon and Syria, and to investigate the background of the allegations and the parties behind them. He called for searching for the real beneficiary of fueling tension, pointing out that Israel is the only beneficiary, and accusing it of continuing attacks on Syria and Lebanon and seeking to destabilize the region.
For its part, the ALMA Center report indicated that the identities of the detainees have not yet been revealed, whether they are local residents, immigrants from other Syrian regions, or members of old networks affiliated with the party and Iran. The Center considered that these possibilities are consistent with Hezbollah’s previously known patterns of activity in southern Syria.
The Yarmouk Basin, located at the border triangle between Israel, Jordan and Syria, is an unstable area in which armed groups, smuggling networks and old infrastructure are active. It previously formed a stronghold for the ISIS branch in southern Syria and a corridor for operations and weapons smuggling. The report pointed to previous incidents, including the shooting of two weapons at Israeli forces in Abdeen last June, and the Syrian authorities thwarting another cell in Quneitra that was said to be affiliated with the party in April 2026, in addition to the launching of two missiles from the western countryside of Daraa towards the Golan in June 2025.
The “Alma” report concluded that the launching of missiles from Syria aims, from the party’s perspective, to attract Israeli responses that will complicate efforts to reduce tension and undermine the stability of the new Syrian government, considering that the arrested cell reflects the extent of the security challenges in southern Syria. On the other hand, Hezbollah stresses its lack of connection to any of these activities and completely denies its military and security presence in the country.
