An international fraud network targets the Lebanese with millions of dollars through fake investment platforms… and the security forces warn
The General Directorate of Internal Security Forces – Public Relations Division, in a statement issued by it, warned citizens of an international fraud network targeting them through fake trading and investment websites, which led to the loss of sums of money amounting to millions of dollars.
In detail, the Information Division explained that, as part of the daily follow-up to combat online fraud crimes, it was found that there are several fake investment sites with names and logos that are very similar to real investment companies, pointing out that the addresses of these sites may differ from the original sites by only one letter, and despite their many names, they are managed by one international fraud network.
The General Directorate called on citizens to be careful and adhere to the following guidelines:
- Stop dealing with these fake sites and close accounts on them immediately.
- Distinguish carefully between these original sites and platforms, and ensure that the company name and its official website are literally mentioned, and not just in form or logo.
- Download applications for companies that you want to deal with exclusively from the “App Store” or “Google Play” stores, and avoid any links sent through the “WhatsApp” application or social networking sites.
- Verify the party requesting the funds before executing any transfer.
- Do not sell, rent, or lend financial accounts under any circumstances, to avoid using them in fraudulent acts that expose their owners to legal prosecution, noting that investigations are underway with a number of intermediaries in this field based on the advice of the competent judiciary.
The Internal Security Forces asked anyone who fell victim to these fraudulent websites to contact the Information Division hotline at (1788) to complete investigations.
In a related context, the Information Division published a table showing a comparison between the fraudulent sites that investigations proved to be fake, and their interviews from the original sites, and it is as follows:
