The European Union Energy Commissioner, Dan Jorgensen, warned that the bloc is facing a severe crisis in energy prices, resulting from the repercussions of the Iranian war on global oil and gas markets, calling on member states to take urgent measures to reduce energy consumption.
In a letter to EU energy ministers, Jørgensen described the current situation by saying: “We are facing a price crisis linked to a supply crisis.”
The European official explained that although the European Union is better prepared compared to the winter of 2021, when Russia reduced gas supplies to the continent, governments must intensify their preparations to face the challenges of the current winter.
In this context, Jorgensen called on energy ministers to “consider taking or continuing to take measures that would maintain the pumping of gas into reserves, or reduce demand for gas and electricity as long as the need arises.”
