Economic diplomacy: Baghdad reactivates its gateway with Damascus through reconstruction projects

The Syrian Minister of Transport, Yaroub Suleiman Badr, who is participating in the Syrian delegation in the “Lebanese-Syrian Investment Forum,” confirmed that the forum represents a unifying platform for businessmen and investors from both countries, considering that the government’s primary role lies in creating an incubating environment and paving the way for joint investments.

Minister Badr explained, in an interview with the “Lebanon Debate” website, that the government’s efforts begin with improving the infrastructure of the transportation sector as it is the easiest and most urgent area, indicating that the plans are not limited to modernizing the road network only, but also include the railway sector as an essential part of the next stage, in addition to providing the necessary facilities at the border crossings to stimulate the movement of transportation and trade exchange.

In the same context, Badr revealed the Syrian government’s commitment to implementing a broad rehabilitation process for the main road network, especially the link with neighboring countries, given its vital role in promoting trade and investment, noting that Damascus has allocated more than $500 million over three years to implement this plan.

He pointed out that the completion of these projects will be through soliciting external offers to bring in specialized companies and expertise, in addition to relying on external supervision companies to ensure implementation according to the highest standards of efficiency and quality.

At the conclusion of his statement, Minister Badr issued an official invitation to well-established Lebanese companies specialized in the road and infrastructure sector to participate in upcoming bid invitations, stressing the government’s full commitment to transparency and competitiveness in selecting those with expertise and specialization, and stressing that infrastructure development constitutes a major entry point for enhancing economic and investment cooperation between Lebanon and Syria.
