The administration of US President Donald Trump took two simultaneous steps to support the Ukrainian position in the face of the war, which was the signing of a new sanctions package targeting Russia, and the approval of an arms deal for Kiev worth approximately 2.7 billion dollars.
The White House announced that President Trump signed the draft sanctions law into law on Friday, while the US State Department confirmed the approval of the new arms deal for the benefit of the Ukrainian government.
The new sanctions law targets the energy and defense sectors in Russia, and includes President Vladimir Putin and a number of senior Russian officials. The new legislation also gives Trump broad powers to impose customs duties that may reach 100% on countries and entities that intensify their purchase of oil and gas from Russia.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed, on Saturday, the entry into force of the law, expressing his thanks to the US President and members of Congress for their support and approval of these measures.
In a parallel context, the US State Department reported that the aforementioned arms deal, worth about $2.7 billion, aims primarily to strengthen and develop Ukrainian air defense systems, in addition to providing military equipment and associated logistical services.
