A recent technical report highlighted the escalation of challenges facing individuals’ voice privacy, with the growing ability of smart wearable devices — such as watches, headphones, smart glasses, and connected cars — to pick up nearby conversations, regardless of whether the personal phone’s microphone is turned off.
The report indicated that the widespread proliferation of microphones in surrounding devices has made protecting privacy a collective issue and a shared responsibility, going beyond the limits of the security settings of an individual mobile phone.
Although these devices often rely on specific alert words or local processing of commands without permanent registration, transferring some data to external servers, or adopting applications with broad powers, enhances the existing risks. According to the report, this requires extreme caution during private meetings and constant review of microphone access permissions.
