To the youth of Lebanon … Beware this “silent killer”!

Smoking is not just a bad habit, but rather a silent epidemic that infiltrates the Lebanese bonds, especially young people, threatening their health and lives in the absence of deterrent measures.

At a time when the rates of cancerous diseases escalated directly to smoking, Representative Najat Aoun Saliba, via “Libanon Deepite”, warn of the exacerbation of the crisis, and calls for the activation of the basic measures adopted by most countries of the world to curb this phenomenon.

Representative Saliba confirms that “studies demonstrate a direct relationship between smoking and cancerous diseases, most notably lung cancer, and research shows that smoking is one of the most prominent reasons leading to these types of Cancer And for other serious diseases.

“Global statistics show that smoking causes the death of more than 7 million people annually around the world, which makes its control a health and human priority, and in Lebanon, it is concerned that smoking rates are among the highest globally, especially among young groups, which is a dangerous indication due to the impact of early smoking on the health of the lungs and the development of the respiratory system.”

She adds: “There are studies conducted at the American University of Beirut and other research centers, which have proven that smoking of all kinds, including smoking the hookah, has a fundamental role in increasing the incidence of cancerous and chronic diseases, which requires activating public awareness and tightening control over the spread of this habit, especially among young people and adolescents.”

She explains that “there are three basic measures that most countries of the world adopt to reduce smoking, which are steps that have proven effective and do not need a new innovation:

The first procedure is to prevent smoking in public and closed places alike, whether it is offices, restaurants or any facilities that people visit, in order to protect non -smokers from indirectly from smoke.

The second procedure is to raise taxes significantly on tobacco products of all kinds, including cigarettes and hookahs, with the aim of limiting their spread and reducing their demand, especially among young groups.

The third procedure is to put in place images and warnings on cigarette boxes that show the real damage to smoking, with the aim of increasing awareness and deterrence, but this step in Lebanon is still limited, as it is applied only partly, while the World Health Organization recommends that it be adopted in a broader and more influential way.

– The procedure is fourth in which a number of countries, which is the prohibition of selling or displaying tobacco products near schools, or the presence of vehicles and shops that sell smoke in their vicinity, to protect students from being affected and accustomed to smoking from an early age.

She stresses that “these three measures are recommended by the World Health Organization, and have proven effective in many countries that have succeeded in reducing smoking rates, especially among small groups.”

And she continues: “If we want young people to live in good health and avoid themselves the risks in the future, it is necessary to pay attention to their health from now, every soul of smoke, even if it is a little, is no less dangerous than ordinary smoking, because the nicotine and toxic substances in the cigarettes and the hookah are present in double quantities compared to the expected amount, in other words, each one may equal to several cigarettes in terms of their effect on Body. ”

She stresses that “it is important for young people to understand that these bad health practices do not harm them only in the short term, but can affect their future and limit their ability to be productive individuals in society, the opposite is true, refraining from smoking from the beginning enhances the ability to achieve and makes them more powerful and healthy and reduces physical and psychological damage, and thus allows them to contribute effectively to society without sacrificing In their health. ”

Saliba concludes that “Lebanon is committed to taking the necessary measures to reduce the use of tobacco and combating smoking, and has approved the framework of the World Health Organization on tobacco (FCTC), which constitutes a clear road map to implement practical steps to get out of this crisis, provided that it is applied properly and effectively.”
