In a world that runs towards speed and technology, the harvest seasons remain special moments that stop time, and return the human to its first roots. While some spend their vacation on the beaches, there are those who start their day at the sunrise, to pick the fruits of figs and grapes with their hands, and carry them in baskets dipped with sweat of fatigue and the satisfaction of the earth.
In Akkar, the farmer Abu Hassan was roaming among the scattered fig trees, examining the fruits with an expert hand and a grateful eye.
Abu Hassan pointed out that “the fig tree is like the mother, if you take care of it, she lavished you with her generosity, and if she neglected it, it dries its bid. This season is good, but it is not like days of time.”
“I cultivate figs and grapes since my youth. There is no year that passes without waiting impatiently for this season. They are not just a livelihood, but part of my memory and my days.”
On the changes that occurred, he replied, “Everything changed: the weather, the people, and the seasons. The children no longer want to work on the ground, but I never thought of leaving it. It is the source of my comfort.”
In the popular market, Abu Khaled was organizing figs and grapes. He stressed, “The turnout is okay, but the economic conditions affected everyone. People still love these fruits, but they buy in fewer quantities.”
He stated, “In the past, the families were buying figs and grapes in abundance, to eat, dry, and to be stored. Today, the purchase is barely sufficient for a meal. However, these fruits remain a special place in the hearts of people.”
Between the hands of farms in the fields and the seller’s voice on the market, the story of figs and grapes remains alive every year. Their fruits are not mere seasonal fruits, but symbols of simplicity, livelihood, and deep connection between a person and his land. While the world changes around us, this season remains a short poem that nature seeks every year.
