“Winamp” is preparing to return to the digital music race again, after years of its declining role in front of modern streaming platforms, by launching a new music platform that seeks to combine the experience of playing local files and paid streaming services, in an attempt to compete with sector giants such as “Spotify” and “Apple Music.”
“Winamp” announced a partnership with “Deezer” to operate the new music subscription service that it intends to launch, where “Deezer” will provide its white label technology, in addition to its global licensed music library, while “Winamp” maintains its brand identity and its own user experience.
This step comes as part of a plan to launch the new generation of the “Winamp” player during the first half of 2027, as the company is betting on reinventing the concept of music players in the streaming era, by integrating paid music services with local user libraries, online radio stations, podcasts, and cloud-stored audio content within one application.
The company confirmed that the new platform will focus on providing a more personalized experience for the user, through an adjustable interface, social features, and tools that help discover, organize, and listen to music in a more flexible way, noting that it seeks to provide a different experience from traditional streaming services.
“Winamp” faces a major challenge in a market controlled by major platforms such as “Spotify,” “Apple Music,” and “YouTube Music,” but the company is betting on its current user base, as it indicates that the free desktop version of the player still includes more than 40 million active users.
The return of “Winamp” also depends on the wave of nostalgia for classic technologies, after the return of interest in devices such as MP3 players and cassette tapes, as the company seeks to blend the traditional listening experience with modern music streaming technologies.
Over the past years, Winamp has made multiple attempts to revive the brand, including experimenting with integrating NFT technologies into the player, before its strategy moved towards supporting artists and content creators through tools to generate income, communicate with the audience, and distribute musical works.
Through its new plan, Winamp hopes to regain its position in the digital audio market, benefiting from its historical legacy with MP3 files, but with a vision that fits the era of music streaming and artificial intelligence.
