Meta stopped activating a feature in its artificial intelligence image generation tool, just days after announcing it, due to the massive wave of anger it sparked among users and major artistic institutions.
The controversial feature, called “Muse Image,” allows anyone on the Instagram platform to generate deepfakes using artificial intelligence, by simply placing an at sign (@) on any public account, so that the system can pull users’ photos and posts and create new content that mimics their features, without asking them for permission in advance.
What made matters worse was that the feature was an “opt-out” system, meaning that if you did not want someone to use your photos to generate fake content, you had to delve deep into your account settings and deactivate an option that allows others to reuse your content, or make your account private instead of public. Meaning that the company placed the burden of protection on the user instead of requiring prior consent. (Russia Today)
