During the past few hours, reports have spread about the possibility of Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou retiring from international football after participating with his country’s national team in the 2026 World Cup, but this news has not been confirmed.
The Moroccan national team had bid farewell to the tournament after losing to France 0-2 in the quarter-finals, failing to repeat the achievement of the 2022 World Cup when it became the first Arab and African team to reach the semi-finals.
Bono performed exceptionally well during the tournament, after saving a decisive penalty kick against the Netherlands that led the “Atlas Lions” to the quarter-finals. He also excelled against France by saving a penalty kick taken by Kylian Mbappe, in addition to a number of remarkable saves.
Although news circulated about the intervention of the President of the Moroccan Football Federation, Faouzi Lekjaa, to persuade Bono to rescind his decision to retire, the goalkeeper did not make any official decision regarding his international future and did not announce his departure from the national team.
Bono has a long career with the Moroccan national team, as he contributed to reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The 35-year-old goalkeeper has played 96 international matches since his first appearance with the “Atlas Lions” in 2013.
Bono also continues his ambition with his team, Al Hilal Saudi Arabia, after he excelled during his participation in the 2025 Club World Cup.
