The England national team suffered a new blow before facing Norway in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, after FIFA decided to ban defender Jarrell Quansah for two matches, following his expulsion against Mexico in the round of 16.

Quansah will miss England’s match against Norway, on Saturday, in Miami Gardens, and will also miss the semi-finals if coach Thomas Tuchel’s team qualifies.

Quansah was sent off in the second half of England’s 3-2 win over Mexico on Sunday, after a dangerous tackle on Jesus Gallardo.

FIFA confirmed that the penalty was due to serious rough play.

England striker Bukayo Saka described the decision as “very disappointing,” but stressed that the team did not want to enter into a state of complaint.

Saka said: “We are not here to complain. We just have to adapt and choose a team ready to beat Norway.”

The punishment comes in light of widespread controversy over the way FIFA deals with red cards, after its disciplinary committee decided to suspend the one-match ban imposed on United States national team striker Folarin Balogun, following the intervention of US President Donald Trump and his communication with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Infantino defended the independence of the International Federation’s disciplinary committee, stressing that Balogun’s case was handled correctly.
