Algeria national team captain Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football, following the “Desert Warriors” exit from the round of 32 in the 2026 World Cup, after losing to Switzerland with two unanswered goals.

Mahrez’s announcement came after the end of the match, as he said in a brief statement: “This was my last match with the national team,” thus ending a long career with Algeria that extended for years.

Mahrez is considered one of the most prominent stars of the Algerian national team in recent years, after he helped lead the “Greens” to the African Cup of Nations title in 2019, and to prominent international participations.

He is also considered one of the most representative players for the national team, having played 119 international matches, and is ranked second on the list of Algeria’s all-time top scorers.

The decision to retire from international football comes at a time when he continues to play at the club level, as he is currently defending the colors of Al-Ahly Saudi Arabia, amid reports of the possibility of his departure in the coming weeks.
