The YouTube platform reached a confidential settlement with a minor who accused the social media platforms of causing him psychological and behavioral harm, in a move that is considered an early test of a huge series of lawsuits facing the platform and other technology companies in the United States.

According to a recent report, the plaintiff known by the letters “RKC” had filed a lawsuit against YouTube along with Meta, Snap, and TikTok, claiming that the design of these platforms contributed to causing harm to it, and the details of the settlement reached between him and Google were not revealed.

A Google spokesman confirmed that the company is still focused on developing products suitable for different age groups and providing effective parental control tools, noting that the case ended in an amicable settlement.

Multi-million dollar judgments add pressure
This case comes after a previous ruling in favor of a young woman known as “KGM,” according to which she was awarded compensation amounting to $6 million due to what she described as damages resulting from the addictive nature of social media platforms. YouTube and Meta shared the value of the compensation, while YouTube announced its intention to appeal the ruling, stressing that it is a platform for broadcasting content and not a social networking network in the traditional sense.

Technology companies are facing increasing pressure, with more than 3,300 lawsuits related to social media addiction before California state courts, in addition to thousands of other cases pending before federal courts. Prosecutors believe that some companies have prioritized profits at the expense of the safety of young users, while companies deny these accusations and affirm their commitment to protecting children and teenagers through safety and family monitoring tools.
