The company “OpenAI” announced the launch of major updates to the memory feature in “ChatGPT”, including a new memory management system called “Dreaming”, which allows the assistant to understand the user’s preferences and past contexts more accurately, while expanding these capabilities to include free account users for the first time.

OpenAI’s first attempts in this field date back to April 2024, when it introduced the “Saved Memories” feature, which relied largely on direct requests from the user to store specific information, but the company later indicated that this method was limited, as some memories became less relevant to daily use over time.

To address this problem, over the past year, OpenAI developed the “Dreaming” system, which runs in the background and collects information extracted from multiple conversations without the need for explicit commands to save it.

According to the company, this system has contributed to improving the ability of “ChatGPT” to customize its responses and reducing the problem of the obsolescence of stored information.

The new memory architecture depends on developing this system to become more efficient and less consuming of computational resources. With the new update, “ChatGPT” will create a “memory summary” that the user can view at any time, with the ability to add or modify information, in addition to specifying cases in which the assistant should make use of that data and preferences during responses.

The feature integrates with the “Memory Sources” feature launched by “OpenAI” in conjunction with the launch of the GPT-5.5 Instant model, which allows the user to know the information on which “ChatGPT” was based to customize his answers, with the ability to modify or delete it when needed.

The company confirmed that the new system has become more capable of retaining context over time. For example: If a user previously discussed their interest in photography and the camera they use, ChatGPT will later be able to provide recommendations for products compatible with their current equipment without having to re-explain those details.

OpenAI added that the system has become more accurate in understanding personal preferences. If a user is planning a travel trip, the assistant can draw on previous travel-related conversations to make suggestions more relevant to their interests. In the case of photographers, for example: he may suggest suitable places for street photography within the itinerary.

The company says that ChatGPT will automatically continue to review its memories over time to keep the information current, helping it avoid relying on outdated data or referring to past events as if they are still coming.

“OpenAI” began rolling out the new memory system to subscribers of the Plus and Pro plans in the United States starting today, and it will reach the rest of the countries in the coming weeks.

Thanks to the company’s improvements to the efficiency of the memory system, free account users will soon be able to take advantage of the “Dreaming” mechanism to automatically record memories, while Plus and Pro subscribers will get greater memory capacity and more advanced customization capabilities.
