As part of a new defense program aimed at enhancing the capabilities of monitoring and tracking air threats from space, the US Armed Forces Space Force has awarded SpaceX, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, a contract worth $4.16 billion.

The force indicated yesterday, Friday, that the contract comes within the “Advanced Space Moving Targets Index” program, which is a project designed to be an integrated system linking space sensor technologies, secure communications links, and ground processing systems, with the aim of enhancing coordination between the components of the American space defense infrastructure.

This development comes in a broader context related to the missile defense system known as “Golden Dome,” which was launched during the administration of US President Donald Trump, and is based on the concept of multi-layered defense, including a layer dedicated to sensing and tracking via satellites.

This system aims to expand the capabilities of ground-based interception systems and strengthen command and control networks, while integrating satellites capable of monitoring and tracking air threats, and perhaps contributing to confronting them, including threats that are still under development in space.

According to the US Space Force statement, the current contract represents the first phase in a series of planned future contracts, as it is expected that a group of satellites will be launched by 2028, providing US forces with an early ability to fill gaps in operational coverage.

The statement indicated that a number of companies are participating in the program within a broader supplier base, pointing out that additional contracts will be announced during the next year.

In a related context, SpaceX recently revealed plans for an initial public offering, amid estimates indicating the possibility of its market value reaching more than $1.75 trillion, if the offering is implemented as planned.
