Arsenal ended their 22-year wait to win the English Premier League title, after they were confirmed as champions after second-placed Manchester City drew 1-1 against Bournemouth last Tuesday.
Arsenal has topped the standings for almost the entire season, and is now four points ahead with one match remaining, and Sunday’s match against Crystal Palace will be a celebration for them.
Arteta told reporters on Thursday: “I went out into the garden and started making a fire. I started preparing the barbecue, but I didn’t see anything at all.”
After occupying second place in the league three times in a row, Arteta learned the news that his team’s long-awaited coronation had been confirmed, from his eldest son Gabriel, who plays for the Arsenal U-18 team.
Arteta said: “My eldest son opened the garden door and started running towards me. He started crying, hugged me and said: We are champions, father.”
He added: “Then my other two sons and my wife came, and it was a beautiful thing to see the joy in them.”
Video clips posted by Arsenal on social media showed the players dancing and cheering in the training center after confirming that they had won the league title one round before the end of the season.
Arteta said: “That was their moment. They had to act freely in that moment. If I had been there, I think it would not have been the same way.”
This is Arteta’s first league title as coach, and he admitted he doubted himself during a pressure-packed season in which the team was, too often, one mistake away from losing the lead in the title race.
Arteta said: “It is not easy to play while constantly carrying this burden on your shoulders. That was one of the most difficult moments… We showed very important values not only in sports, but in life as well. They are: perseverance, flexibility, and calmness in moments when people doubt.”
He pointed out that the atmosphere in the club changed after winning the Premier League, as the team’s confidence was strengthened before the Champions League final scheduled against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30. (Erm News)
