Officials from FIFA and New Jersey transportation authorities reported that the cost of round-trip public transportation to attend World Cup matches in the state would be $150. This amount represents a significant increase compared to the usual cost of less than $15 for the same trip.
This significant increase, equivalent to ten times the normal price, comes in addition to match ticket prices that can reach thousands of dollars, raising questions about the total cost of attending tournament events.
“We expect to sell out tickets for public transportation, whether via express buses or trains, because it will be the fastest and most efficient way to reach the stadium,” said the CEO of the World Cup Host Committee in New York/New Jersey, indicating expectations of high demand.
The service is scheduled to include round-trip trips from New York City to MetLife Stadium via private express trains and buses. Tickets will be reserved only for individuals who hold match tickets, and are non-transferable or refundable. The sale of these tickets is scheduled to begin on May 13th.
On the other hand, other transportation options will be limited, as the public parking lots surrounding the stadium, which usually accommodate more than 20,000 cars, will be closed on match days.
MetLife Stadium will host eight matches in the 2026 World Cup, including the final, which increases pressure on the transportation infrastructure during the tournament period.
