After eight years spent at Apple, it seems that John Giannandrea, who was brought in by Tim Cook from Google to supervise artificial intelligence and machine learning projects, is close to leaving the company, after the difficulties faced in launching “Apple Intelligence” and the new version of “Siri.”
During the past years, Giannandrea served as Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Strategy, and his visibility increased specifically in 2024 when Apple presented its expected set of artificial intelligence features during the Worldwide Developers Conference.
But at the end of last year, and after a series of failures related to “Siri” and the artificial intelligence file, signs of his departure appeared to be looming on the horizon, after his powers gradually diminished over the past few months.
According to what Mark Gurman mentioned in his “Power On” publication, this stumbling is not necessarily due to a personal failure on the part of Gianandrea, but also to the nature of Apple’s senior management, which, as he described, is managed as if it were a small family company, which limits the ability of newcomers to make radical changes.
Gorman pointed out that April 15 represents an important date related to the maturity of Apple shares, which is what Giannandrea was likely waiting for, and revealed that his last days in the company may end during the next week.
At the same time, Gorman ruled out a quick move to another technology company, and indicated that the closest step is towards working as a consultant in the world of startups.
Giannandrea’s professional history seems sufficient to justify why he was brought to Apple in 2018, but his career within the company did not go as expected. What made matters more complicated was that Apple’s leadership did not initially show much enthusiasm for the artificial intelligence file, before this trend changed later, which made the conditions within the company completely unsuitable for the success of its mission.
